Sun Spots Are So Last Year

Greetings from the West Coast!

Well we all know that we should be wearing sunscreen ALL the time.  In fact, you can barely buy a foundation or facial lotion that doesn’t have some level of SPF in it.  But how many of us really reapply?  That’s the real question.  We can’t help but wear it every day, but when you’re sweating and/or swimming outside, do you really take the time to apply more than just once?
As you all have read before, I’m not what you call a couch potato.  I hike, run, surf even garden.  I’m an outdoor kinda girl.  I love being in the sun and feel energized when I’m in it.  As I get older I can see the importance of taking care of my skin.  Besides it’s flattering at my age to still get carded in a bar.  So what do I use to protect my face (and well my body too) when I’m out and about?
One of my all time favorites is from a little company called Sun Putty based in New York (www.sunputty.com).  They use all natural ingredients that don’t harm the environment and seep into our waters.  I’ve heard friends say; oh I don’t want to put sunscreen on my face because I don’t want to break out.  Really?  That’s probably the lamest thing I’ve ever heard.  As zinc oxide as their active ingredient they also use  their special combination of ingredients like andiroba oil, copaiba balsam oil and cupuacu oil that aid in keeping your skin free from blemishes and help renew and protect your skin from drying out.  This stuff is amazing!  I will use it when I surf and it doesn’t come off.  I feel like I’m protected the whole time.. wave after wave!
My newest find though is from a company called KINeSYS Performance Sunscreen (www.kinesys.com).  I like this product because it’s a spray, not an aerosol, but a spray which means it’s alcohol-free.  Its light oil spray gently goes on and protects and doesn’t run.  Typically I wear this when I run in the afternoon.  Even with all the sweatiness, it doesn’t run in my eyes.  My kids even like this one because it’s not cold when I spray it on unlike the aerosols.  I know what you’re thinking, a spray oil?  Isn’t that going to stain my bathing suit or clothes with the overspray?  Nope!  The properties in this sunscreen do not leave behind any oily substance.  Not to mention the smell is not your typical coconut smell.  The people at KINeSYS decided to choose a different tropical smell, mango… oh yeah… yummy!

Have a fun filled weekend friends and remember if you love ‘em, cover ‘em!
Cheers!

SPF's a must

Greetings Grayce here!

According to the latest figures from Cancer Research, the deadliest form of skin cancer has now become the most common kind of cancer for women in their 20s malignant melanoma. It is crucial to use a sunscreen, you must protect your skin, you can still get color and there are so many wonderful self tanners (see our blogs)

emerginC SPF 30 tinted  is super-lightweight, non-greasy sun block which provides a broad spectrum UVA/UVB
I am always outdoors doing something riding, gardening, swimming at the beach, pool or lake. I truly like this product because it goes on smoothly and stays on while I am doing some of the above activities. Most importantly it does not sting my eyes…at all. It has a slight tint which blends nicely to all skin types.

It will leave your skin feeling hydrated with a blend of wonderful ingredients: vitamins A, C & E, Coenzyme Q10, Zinc, Titanium Licorice Root, Siberian Sea Buckthorn Extract, Pine Bark Extract, St. John's Wort, Gingko Biloba And More..

Burn Now, Regret it Later!

Happy Wednesday Fabulous Readers!

Jessica here and this week we get to review Sunscreen! That means it's summer and I can go to the beach now, right?? The beach is my favorite place to be in the summer and any time I can go, I will be there. Even though I go for the ambiance and relaxation, I also go to try and soak up some sun, of course. My pasty white skin won't tan itself!

I always think it best to break in my winter skin with a burn to get it use to the summer sun and tanning so I usually do this...not really on purpose I do use sunscreen but I usually don't put it on until I start to feel a burning...not good I know. What is even more scary is that I have been seeing more and more articles about teens and people in their early 20's battling skin cancer! We always knew tanning beds were not the best option for tanning, but as we learn more and more about the negative effects it's just plain crazy to take the risk! I admit when I was a teen I would go to tanning beds before a big event, like prom, photo shoots or in the summer to be tan before I went to the beach. I am guilty of going just as recently as the winter, who doesn't need a warm pick me up then? Honestly now my mind had completely changed. It is sad about these teens and young adults developing cancer from tanning beds and just not wearing sunscreen, but it truly is great that they are sharing their stories with the world so to hopefully prevent anyone else from going through what they have to go through. This one article in particular disturbed me so I suggest you read it too, CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Okay, so now on to the protecting! My absolute favorite brand of sunscreen is by far Hawaiian Tropic! It feels great, rubs in easily and the scent is heavenly! It also last long and protects my skin...like a sunscreen should of course! They have a great collection of sun protection and tanning SPF lotion which is all just amazing. I use the Sheer Touch Lotion with SPF 6 protection, which is part of the tanning collection and perfect for me trying to achieve a tan but still want to have some protection.

I have tattoos, so when it comes to preserving and protecting tattoos from fading (or looking like you had work done in prison) you must use a higher SPF to keep your artwork completely protected! For my tattoos I use an SPF 30 at least, I recommend that as a minimum, higher is always best when preserving expensive body art. Hawaiian Tropic: Silk Hydration Lotion Sunscreen is actually a perfect SPF to use because it also hydrates skin and keeps it moist and nourished and looking as fabulous as you on the beach :)

Remember for SPF to help you out you must do your part in following directions and always apply sunscreen BEFORE you go out in the sun. I put in on when I am getting ready for the beach so it has time to absorb and work by time I get to the ocean!

Well that is all for me this week, don't forget to stay protected when in the sun so you can stay looking youthful for a long time!

Sun Protection: Round Two

Hi All!  It’s Tuesday again, but not any ordinary Tuesday…it’s the first Tuesday of our second year of blogging!  I remember the beginning of this blog well, as it was the main focus of my internship with the FABULOUS team last summer.  I can’t believe it’s been a year since we began writing, and I’m so happy and proud to see how far the blog has come (thanks to Jess and the team)!!!

Well, here we go.  The first product category to be reviewed for a SECOND time—in this second year of blogging—is quite important and timely actually: it's sunscreen!

Since learning the difference between chemical and mineral-based sunscreen sun care products from Sara last summer, I’ve become an advocate of mineral-based protection.  This isn’t because these products are better; it’s more of a personal preference.  After trying many products last summer and over a lucky winter vacation, I’ve settled on a favorite: Lavender scented SPF 30 Badger Balm.  It smells great, feels great, and—while it takes longer to rub in, due to its zinc base—it provides the longest “wear” of any product I've tried.

If you’re looking for a new mineral based sunscreen, I highly recommend Badger Balm!  While its pretty wet and rainy in Boston now, I like to always have a tube of sunscreen on me during the summer months, and you can bet this’ll be my go-to for summer 2012!

Until next week, this is Tara wishing you all the very best!!
