As Spring is in full force and the sun is out... A Great summer is about to begin!
As we are all still finishing up our spring cleaning in our homes.... this is a great opportunity to clean out your bathroom as well! Look at expiration dates, try to remember when you purchased some of your older bath, body and personal care products! When you realize.... (as I have) some of your skincare is from well, I think some was the late 90's... I got out my trash bags and started to purge. 3, yes I said 3 full trash bags later, I can finally see what I have :) What I want to have :) and now I am ready for new stuff! And now my husband can't say..."What do you mean you need new body lotion, what is all that stuff in the bathroom"! Ha! There is plenty of room in bathroom now :)
Here are some rules of thumb for making sure you have personal care that is still good (not expired) and safe. When cosmetics and skin care get old the preservation system will deteriorate, which means they are more likely to grow mold and fungus, from the regular use. Also there are ingredients which will no longer be as effective and a lot of time you will see products separate and or change color (changing color by itself does not always mean the product is bad). If you see signs of this, it is time to let it go...
Yikes! This is an average bathroom! |
The average Skin care, bath and body, and hair care items are good for approximately 2 years. Cosmetics are about the same. You should change out your mascara every 3 to 6 months. Eye or lip pencils should be shaved down to fresh every couple of months.
Side note: Do not forget you should wash your brushes every week. Use your facial cleanser or shampoo and rub it into the brushes. wash off the soap with warm water and then pat dry on a wash cloth. I tend to wash my brushes at night and leave them to dry on the wash cloth, so they are ready for me to use them in the morning.
Bottom line is if you can't remember when you bought it, you may want to rethink holding on to it!
Purging feels great!
Have a great week!

Ps. I would love to hear your purging story.... What is the oldest thing you found in your cabinet? anything turn gross, lol?
