Tannins for Tired Eyes

Hi everyone. It’s Tara here, with what I hope to be an interesting twist on this week’s topic. As I’ve been known to do in the past, today I will not review a specific product; instead I’ll discuss a very silly, fun, simple and cheap way to depuff and brighten the eye area…with an emphasis on simple and cheap.

Eye treatments I’ve purchased in stores have never provided great results. Maybe it’s because my standards are too high (desperate, sleep-deprived times are when I reach for these most often); or maybe I’m simply not using the right products for my skin. Regardless, there is one remedy I keep coming back to, because it really works.

And that remedy is… USED TEA BAGS!

Yes, that’s right. When I need an effective fix for tired, puffy eyes (and I have some time) I’ll put my used green tea bags in a bowl, place in the fridge for 30 minutes or so, and then apply to my eyes for about 10. The result is always great.

How, you ask, does this work so well?

For one, it’s the caffeine. We learned the benefits of caffeine (and specifically of tea) as an eye treatment ingredient, in Sara’s post yesterday. My tea bags (usually they’re Yogi Kombucha or Super Antioxidant Green Tea) also work because of their EGCG—a serious anti-inflammatory ingredient only found in green tea. Finally, the power of the caffeine-EGCG combo is only strengthened by the cold temperature of the bags, which provides a quick relief for puffiness.

So that’s my contribution of the week. Hopefully this advice can provide be helpful to you, as we approach the season of boozing…later nights…and saltier foods—ahem, I mean holiday parties!

Speaking of which, have a Happy and safe Thanksgiving!
