A Healthy Defense to Sun Kissed Skin

Hey Cert Fab readers! It’s Tuesday, and a perfect week to talk about Vitamin and Antioxidant Skincare!  Now that the summer is (all too soon) drawing to an end, there’s a good chance that our skin has seen a decent amount of damage this season.  Even though we may be happy with the glowing tans that we worked so hard on, it took some serious cell damage to get to this point.  Even though I always make sure to wear SPF when outside, (as EVERYONE should!) there is still a lot of damage done to even my youthful skin by now. Between all of those hours spent baking outside, typical teenage acne damage, and all of the surrounding environmental effectors I could use some serious help when it comes to repairing damaged skin.
When going through acne problems in high school, my doctor prescribed Retin-A Micro, a gel form of tretinoin, also known as an over the counter retinoid gel.  A retinoid is a vitamin A derivative that unclogs pores, boost collagen to reduce fine lines, and speeds cell turnover to even out discoloration and smooth skin. Tretinoin is a drug family closely related to that of Vitamin A, however stronger and targeted mainly towards acne and aged, sun damaged skin.  For some, Retin-A works extremely well but for me it was just too harsh on my sensitive skin and dried it out to the point of flaking.  Even though the Retin-A was too strong for my skin I liked the fact that it cleared up almost all of my blemishes and my skin saw a better tone almost immediately.  So I decided to keep looking for products related to it that might be a little less harsh and would help reduce blemishes while also treating any sun damage I had accumulated thus far.  What I found was another retinoid cream that I really grew to like.  It was NeutrogenaHealthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with Helioplex.  It’s a light weight daily moisturizer and it’s perfect for my skin.  The daily facial moisturizer has SPF and is full of pure vitamin E and anti-oxidants to rejuvenate while protecting all at the same time.  When it comes to multi-tasking this moisturizer works over time.  I feel like my skin is protected from the sun but at the same time its lightweight to the point where I feel like I’m not wearing a moisturizer let alone an SPF.   The difference I saw in the tone of my skin when I first started using this product wasn’t as drastic as the Retin-A but that’s because it’s a lighter form of a retinoid for people with skin like mine who can’t handle rugged products.  However overtime, the tone of my skin started to even out and look healthier.  The helioplex in the lotion protects from both UVA and UVB rays so when wearing this lotion I never see a sunburn and my skin feels hydrated with no flakey or dry spots throughout the entire day.  So I feel reassured in knowing that the damage that my skin has seen this far is being pampered by an anti-oxidant and vitamin rich moisturizer.  One that will work to repair and strengthen my skin hand in hand with moisturizing and protecting it from future damage.

Now that were all finding ourselves in those dismal thoughts of summer washing away, find a way to do something out of the ordinary and worth remembering.  Don’t let the little bit of the summer we have left slip by! Enjoy everyone! Until Next time. –Gina
