Hi Everyone, this is Sara with some more information about SPF ingredients...
I know this topic can be quite overwhelming to some...
So here is some more info, hope it helps.
Physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide protect against UVB and UVA. However, zinc oxide tends to blocks more UV radiation than titanium dioxide. I tend to look for the combination.
Some chemical sunscreens can also block both UVB and UVA rays.
Octocrylene is also known as a cinnamate, as well as Benzophenones such as avobenzones.
In July 2006, the FDA approved an over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen ingredient known as Anthelios SX that contains the UVA filter ecamsule. Ecamsule is a potent UVA-blocking compound that has been sold in sunscreen products in Canada and Europe since 1993.
Most other sunscreen ingredients are primarily UVB blockers.
Over the next year, I personally think there are going to be a number of companies reformulating their sunscreens, because now as we are learning more and more of the importance of protecting against both UVA and UVB protection.
Also, companies will have to test their formulas to prove the UVB & UVA protection are meeting the standards to call it Broad Spectrum, no matter what the ingredients are....
this will give the consumer a more accurate account of what the sunscreen they are buying will protect them from.
If you are concerned about having UVA and UVB protection right now and do not know what to buy, try to stick to the physical blockers like titanium and zinc as they will give you more protection. Check out emerginC Tinted SPF 30.... It really lasts a long time... this has some color, so I look tan anyway, and do not get that White on my face that sunscreens with titanium and zinc sometimes leave.
Happy sunning!!! & Be Safe!
