The Things We Do for Beauty...

Happy Tuesday, everyone. It’s Tara here, writing about my least favorite beauty ritual of them ALL!

It’s funny how things change over time. I remember BEGGING my Mom to allow me to me start shaving my legs when I was very young; these days, I absolutely dread it! My least favorite is when I have to rush through shaving my legs—which happens often in warmer months like this one—and I get the inevitable battle wounds...awful…but also necessary.

As the lovely Sara mentioned yesterday, there are tons of options for hair removal. After having tried them all, I’ve decided that my favorite (well, my favorite for this necessary EVIL!) is waxing (sugaring is also a great, all-natural, and very similar option, but it’s much more difficult to find salons with this service, so for now we’ll talk wax...). For me, waxing has had many great benefits, the greatest being that it minimizes unwanted hair from growing back, and it lasts a long time without costing as much as laser (the dreaded “rubber band snaps” that I only paid for once!).

As with everything, you need to look out for your safety when getting waxed. Beyond the obvious precautions like a clean space, technician gloves, wax temperature, etc., I always like to ensure that the technician is using a new can of wax for each appointment. Think for a second where the little wooden stick has been on others…then dipped back into the can of wax now being used for you…NOW you’ll probably want a new canister of wax to yourself as well!

Finally, there are many variations of wax. I’ve heard it doesn’t work as well on people with thick hair, but I prefer the gentler organic waxes. They leave my skin much less irritated and red (most contain aloe), which in turn lessens the need for a follow-up “soothing” lotion—these lotions ALWAYS clog my freshly opened pores! Yuck!

Whatever your hair removal process of choice, God speed! My pre-wax cocktail: an advil and some numbing cream. What's your hair removal ritual or trick??
